"Although rooted in traditional fantasy, EOLYN stretches and breaks the bounds in many ways, leading to a read that is fresh and unpredictable." -- Shauna Roberts, author of Like Mayflies in a Stream and The Hunt

"Gastreich's EOLYN focuses on the emotional, political, and physical conflicts between powerful and three-dimensional characters." -- Carlyle Clark, co-author of The Apocalypse Gene

"I cannot recommend this book highly enough, and it has already earned a place on my 'Most Treasured" shelf'.
It is in a class of its own..." -- Amazon Customer Review

What People Are Saying About EOLYN

Though Eolyn becomes the hope of a rebellion, she never has to carry the whole weight of the story; Akmael, the "witch" Ghemena, and other characters develop many intriguing facets. Gastreich allows her heroes to have flaws--including moments of cowardice--and some victories bring new sorrows. Vigorously told deceptions and battle scenes will satisfy fans of traditional epic fantasy with a romantic thread. --PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

When it's summer within the story, you'll feel the heat, smell the warmed earth and flowers. When it's winter, you'll feel the chill down to your bones. Ms. Gastreich's uncanny talent for truly creating a world her readers can become part of is a rare gift, and one she shares abundantly in Eolyn.
--TERRI-LYNNE DEFINO, author of FINDER

Gastreich's debut novel is an excellent example of the other breed of Epic Fantasy epitomized by the works of Guy Gavriel Kay, which is to say, not the traditional "unlikely but fated and/or prophesied hero must face the dreaded return of dark lord." Instead, Gastreich's Eolyn focuses on the emotional, political, and physical conflicts between powerful and three-dimensional characters.
--CARLYLE CLARK, co-author of THE APOCALYPSE GENE

Eolyn is a great story, skilfully combining elements of familiar folklore and more original devices to ease the reader into a world that is at once both authentically complex in government, society and personalities and yet instantly accessible to the reader. Humour leavens the story...but never becomes intrusive or undermines the strong threads of loss, duty, romance and revenge that permeate the book. And the action is often superb.

Eolyn...is quite a change in pace in the epic fantasy.  For one thing, it's quie iconoclastic in its treatment of sexuality, especially women's.  For another, it has a well-thought-out and different magical system that though reminiscent of Raymond E. Feist, but has made it all her own.  The journey of the eponymous heroine is at times harrowing, amusing, sensual but always human.  Add to that a splash of Spanish realism that at times feels like Marquez and you have a quite different first novel that satisfies, in its own way, the many various tropes of an epic fantasy; Babe in the woods (literally!), revenge, sweeping war, and coming of age, even as it plucks with a more modern tone at the concepts of love and sex."
